Front axles 4340 Chrome-Moly provide up to 50% increased strength over stock axles for use in extreme performance applications with large tires and high horsepower. For extreme high performance use—where twisting torque is important, but bending stresses are limited—4140 or 4340 Chrome-Moly alloy steels work well. 4140 Chrome-Moly provides approximately 27 percent more strength than 1040 steel, while 4340 Chrome-Moly provides approximately 39 percent more strength than 1040. This translates into huge gains in twisting strength, assuming bending will not be an issue. 4340 is approximately 10 percent stronger than 4140 due to the extra nickel content, which increases toughness
and strength.
Hardness
Hardness is an important material property that affects material strength. Hardness is related to a material’s resistance to deformation or penetration. A well-made axle shaft with the right alloy and the proper hardness is less likely to wear, bend, twist, break, or deteriorate as a result of the pressures and forces it supports.Achieving the desired level of hardness in an axle shaft is done by controlling several processes. Selecting the right material, and using the proper processes for tempering, normalizing, and heat-treating are all necessary in order to produce a strong axle shaft. Most automotive axle shafts are case-hardened. Case-hardening leaves a hard surface layer (approximately 0.100” to 0.400” deep) and a relatively soft, strong, tough core. Through-hardening can increase strength, but it can also lead to problems if the shaft is used to support the weight of the vehicle. Through-hardening produces a shaft which is usually too brittle to support the side loads the flange incurs while supporting the vehicle. Case-hardening causes less distortion and cracking than through-hardening, especially in large cross sectional areas.Quality
There are many intricate and scientifically proven processes involved to produce a quality Yukon axle shaft. The short list includes: choosing the right steel, upset forging the flange end,
normalization of the material, rough turning into the approximate shape of the shaft, final smooth turning, cutting or rolling the ines, drilling the stud holes, turning the C-clip groove, hardening the shaft, magnaflux inspection for cracks, finishing/grinding the bearing and seal surfaces, and finish machining the flange. Axle Spines
Axle spines can be cut or rolled into the shaft. Both methods are certainly strong, and each comes with its own advantages. Rolled splines can produce a better grain structure in the material for extended durability, while cutting the splines allows the shaft hardness to be consistently thick—right up to the ends of the splines. Both ine forming methods hold up well for axle shafts, and both can be a good way to go. Yukon axle shafts are made with both methods, depending on the specific application requirements for accuracy, strength, and durability.
This warranty is not transferable to another party. “No Questions Asked” replacement for first warranty return, however we reserves the right to either replace axle or refund original purchase price after the first warranty claim.
